Can vouch for this 100%.
In my line, I naturally rub shoulders with known individuals. Happens often.
Many people would be amazed with how weird, or awkward many are, in social situations. A lot simply haven't had to develop skills in this area for whatever reason. Often, they're successful in their niche, simply because they either hyper-focused on one thing and became really good, or had insane natural talent in that ONE area from the start and rode that upwards. So that social side of them is "stock", if you will.
Now, a good chunk have charisma and social skills to back it up, but there's a sizeable amount that would fade into the background if you didn't know who they were. I'm reminded of some amusing situations like that where I literally had to introduce people to them because there was a disconnect. After learning the person's status etc., IMMEDIATE change in demeanor towards them, haha. Beforehand, ignoring them or even kinda looking down on them. I usually help them play it off by using my patented "They usually aren't so flat, they're really tired and jetlagged from (impressive but true social proof thing here to buff up their status properly)". But the status then drives things for them with no effort. Hell, long ago before I became much more extroverted, it happened to me often too!
Shannon is correct, "they" form the impression in their mind, then go with that, rationalising everything afterwards through that, to "paint a picture" of you. It's tough to describe for a third person view, but it's like they "excuse away" anything that doesn't go with their view of you. Or it's looked at in a positive light or given slack to "maintain the image" they have of you. When their view changes from "he's a random" to "omg he's high status!" suddenly, it's hilarious seeing the GIANT change in behaviour XD. Sometimes it's hard to contain the laughter . It's true it's zero effort though, because if it took effort, that'd take away from being high status to begin with.
I loved that fake celeb prank. Pretty much exactly what it's like. I dress normal etc., so new women wouldn't know my "resume" at a glance. But when they hear about it...same thing, massive change. It hurts in a way, as I wonder why they're now this way and think the worst, but it is what it is. Just the way people are.
