Still listening to ASC 5g at night and off and on through the day. Last night again for about the third time, I was awakened to wicked sounds in the lapping waves- its just the pattern I guess but its a very disturbing thing to wake up to. I assume that my efforts to increase volume are just making this more obvious. I actually had to shut it off last night and return to my normal cricket symphony to go back to sleep.

The only indication that I've seen that perhaps anything at all is occurring is that I seem to be more tired in the morning but I'm always tired in the morning so its hard to tell. I haven't noticed any dreams lately either.

Maybe my confidence is just high enough already. I'm debating a switch to Aura of Sexiness or the Self Esteem product or both.

I have started my kids on "Get along with siblings" and will report on the results of that in here also. They already listen to sounds at night so its easy enough to do, though the ocean sounds get a lot louder and quieter- I wish it was available in a sound with more consistent volume.

I'm not sure how everyone deals with the stereo separation issue at night unless you lie flat on your back with headphones all night. When you roll over you're going to lose the stereo separation. I just don't see how anyone can get 8 hours a day of proper stereo exposure.

There are headphones that are made for sleeping. I picked up sleep phones and I have been using them. They actually work pretty good. The cable comes out of the top and back of you head so they tend to not get in the way and they are comfortable. I figured the extended separation of stereo throughout the night might increase the strength which is why I picked them up.

I decided to run the ultrasonic version of ASC 5g last night based largely on the fact that I can't identify another program that seems a better candidate for "show me something" duty. A couple of different RTA apps for my ipad show plenty of information in the 18khz+ range, so I believe that the setup was correct. It was nice to have my regular low volume crickets last night for a change while the ultrasonic was playing and it was nice not to wake up to wicked-ish chattering sounds.

I've seen a lot of semi-conflicting information about headphones versus speakers. One faq says that headphones are always preferred. Another said that headphones should not be used with ultrasonics. Another said cellphone speakers won't work. Another said they are ~"servicable but not optimal". And then I see where Shannon said he gets most of his listening in on speakers and another admin gets his nighttime listening in on speakers at the bed.

I guess the different generations may have different requirements. Hopefully the ultrasonics at night on speakers will work and not be impacted.

Kids are still listening to "get along with siblings" at night. I see that there is an ultrasonic version of it, so I'm going to switch them to this so that they don't complain as much about the sounds.

What's the iPad app you are using that shows you the hz?

Nah kids have much higher frequency hearing. Makes me wonder about that old app that apparently you can only hear under a certain age.

Shannon can probably go into more detail about it.

As for listening, yes headphones get maximum result but I listened to programs for like a year without them and still got great results. And it's true not to use ultrasonic with headphones cos it's easy to have it too loud.. but you can use the masked versions which has the exact same content. The confusion may have come from not realizing that on each program the tracks have the same content (ultrasonic/ocean wave/trickling steam) you can use the other 2 with headphones but not ultrasonic.

I am the one who uses programs at night on my cd player while i'm in bed. And through the day on my computer, some of that with headphones. Phone speakers can work, but if they are not stereo it won't be optimal.

Interestingly enough, my son can detect the "screeching" from my cellphone but not from a portable stereo hooked to mp3 player via cassette adapter. My guess is that the cassette adapter has some HF rolloff to help with hiss and noise.

The program I've used on the ipad is SpectrumView. I realize that it isn't a calibrated instrument and should only be considered an example of what might be occurring.

if the volume on your phone is at max... then chances are he can... I am 32 and I can hear screeching at max.

I personally found when I let my phone run all night long... I wake up with feeling like I pulled an all nighter before my exam day...

I would put headphone then Speaker then Phone in decreasing level it had effect on me on my experience.

Phone speakers are much less capable than, say, laptop speakers typically (although that may be changing). If you have it calibrated properly, it'll be detectable to some people and many children at even mid to lower volumes from a cell phone. I usually play mine from my cell phone at 11/15 volume, and I can't hear it. Andrew, however, can. My friend Mike has a girlfriend who can hear it all the way down to 7/15. At volumes of 12+ on my phone, the speaker distortion becomes noticeable to everyone around me.

Kids can hear higher pitches because they have smaller eardrums and otological structures in general, I theorize.

My cellphone shows a similar structure on the spectrum analyzer as my studio monitors- peak around 18khz. I do hear some mild crackling in it though and its obviously not stereo. Crackling goes away if I turn the volume down a little and the spectrum analyzer still shows the audio.

I'm not going to count on it but when I'm sitting around unable to listen to it in a better way, I'll use the cellphone.

I've had the silent ASC5g playing nonstop at my desk at work the last few days.

The spectrum analyzer should be showing a peak around 18 kHz, as that's the peak I use in my ultrasonics. If the signal fades to nothing at or above 20 kHz, you're fine. Crackling means it's too loud in that case.
