Usually it will be a case of resistance based on fear of losing control of oneself at the subconscious level, but there are a variety of reasons why it happens. If it was your speaker, then either the speaker would have to be damaged and producing no audio, or it would have been producing audible static, so I don't think it's your speaker. I have seen cases where the volume was accidentally set to zero. But in cases where you are using it properly and it doesn't work, it will almost invariably be resistance based on fear of losing control of oneself.
