Beta will increase when critical faculty is used; alpha or theta increases as the imagination is used more. So for instance, reading a book on advanced quantum physics will tend to trigger beta/gamma, while reading a fantasy novel (and being really into it to the point that you stop seeing the words and start experiencing it in your mind) will be triggering alpha or theta.
Reading it on a TV or PC screen doesn't make much difference. Movies and video games are not static, as text is.
