Interestingly enough, my son can detect the "screeching" from my cellphone but not from a portable stereo hooked to mp3 player via cassette adapter. My guess is that the cassette adapter has some HF rolloff to help with hiss and noise.
The program I've used on the ipad is SpectrumView. I realize that it isn't a calibrated instrument and should only be considered an example of what might be occurring.
