This sounds like the cause-and-effect confusion that I'd mentioned earlier. I may be misunderstanding, but you seem to be looking for a single universal answer that explains 100% of things 100% of the time. If so, 42's a popular choice. Or, more seriously, the willingness to accept multiple contradictory answers and less than 100% of things less than 100% of the time. On most days, I choose answer #2.
