I wish I knew how to describe it better. It's as though they are on some sort of autopilot giving superficial stereotyped predictable responses, like a script to a bad movie. Yet their brains are on overdrive frantically searching for a category to place me in, ways in which to react to me, how to best fit themselves into the interaction, etc. It's as though they are in a perpetual state of attempting to emotionally orient themselves to me and nothing in their data banks seems to fit. So they default to superficial responses. But the responses are disconnected and it's as though 1 second they are looking at me like a celebrity, and the next like I've got dark green skin, and the next like I'm their long lost friend. They're cycling through "how I'm supposed to react to people" and nothing is fitting.
So I guess I might as well be from another planet... hence the alien analogy.
