Regarding the definition of "cool," look up a paper by Dar-Nimrod on the subject (it seems to be on Academia, so yay). I first read it a couple of years ago and he ended up separating "cool" into different categories, cachet coolness and contrarian coolness (IIRC he ended up plotting these as axes for a Cartesian graph).
