Any time you convert between different formats loss is generally likely. There was a time that I'd have said inevitable, but many conversion programs have gotten to the point that unless converting to a lossy format, you won't have any loss. In other words, mp3 to cdda should NOT have any loss.

Your iPod most likely shouldn't have changed the format, since mp3 should be a native format to the device.

I find it unlikely that you had any problems of a technical sort...
