Of course you can be loved by your mother and still be a man. But if you're an adult, does she choose your clothes for you? Feed you? Bathe you? Tell you how to live your life? I sure as hell hope not. It has nothing to do with insecurity. There are reasonable boundaries, and a man has the responsibility of taking responsibility for himself and empowering himself thereby.
