Parts of the subconscious can apparently only think in visual symbols. Dreams can be several different things. Dreams can be processing, play, exploration, communication and interpretation of memories of activities you engage in out-of-body while you're sleeping. Not every dream has meaning, but they are also not worthless, either. There is a good reason people try to interpret dreams, and keep dream journals.
