It's a horror-movie camera technique, where everything suddenly zooms in and distorts. I've seen it used in the Evil Dead movies, as well.

Sounds like the classic "push-pull" technique - change the zoom level of the lens while physically moving the camera closer or farther as needed. An awesome cinematography trick when done at the right time.
