Given that I am an obvious foreigner in China I can't be sure though since they stare at foreigners anyway, no matter if they're attracted or not. Panicked reactions usually come from the fear of having to use English or them never having met foreigners before.
In any case, I feel a lot more social and caught myself chatting people up more. But have yet to meet a girl that's clearly interested(Chinese girls aren't subtle about coming on to guys so it should be obvious). I hope I'll have cleared up enough stuff in a month or two!
Chinese frequently give panicked responses from a strong, sudden conscious fear of social disgrace. My uncle used to teach English in China, and he saw this a lot. Nobody learned anything because they were all too afraid of what the rest of the class thought of them for not being perfect. Consequently, the whole class was a waste of time, and students would hire the teacher to tutor them privately if they actually wanted to learn English.
Now think about this... what sort of response would she get if she acted on what the sniper is doing to her? Hmmm...
Those panicked responses are a sure sign that she is responding with sexual arousal and desire. We just have to deal with social stigma now.
