Don't consider the unconscious stupid: if drugs are "giving" something to user, that cannot be obtained via "normal" ways, the person will continue the addictive behavior.
I would say that there is not "no" reason. The key reason(s) will have been removed, but there are other factors to consider, such as the physical effects of the addictive substances. Those, however, are a secondary in terms of impact in overcoming addiction, and the primary, as I have stated before, would be the psychological.
Clear the psychological and you have a much, much easier time of it.
