Simply don't turn the volume too high when using ultrasonics on a speaker system. Some lower powered speakers will begin to crack anyway at higher volumes and become unusable, but higher power & higher quality speakers that can keep increasing the volume to extreme levels without cracking can definitely damage hearing over time. This is due to blatant and extreme misuse though.
The way to calibrate it is to first turn on the masked ocean or stream. Play the ocean or stream track until it is at a soft and calm level. Keeping the volume the same, switch to the ultrasonic. Basic rule is if it is irritating, turn it down. Being "tough" and sticking out the high pitch sounds doesn't make the subliminal any more effective. The whole point of a subliminal (ultrasonics are actually supraliminals:above hearing) is that you don't hear them. Even after calibrating I usually have to turn my volume down three notches as I have very sensitive hearing.
