Ultrasonic sounds... harmful? - maros - 07-07-2011

I recently was looking up on wether or not high frequency sounds can damage ones hearing and I am not talking about through use of headphones or earbuds, and there seemed to be conflict about it. anyone have the real scoop?

Simply don't turn the volume too high when using ultrasonics on a speaker system. Some lower powered speakers will begin to crack anyway at higher volumes and become unusable, but higher power & higher quality speakers that can keep increasing the volume to extreme levels without cracking can definitely damage hearing over time. This is due to blatant and extreme misuse though.

The way to calibrate it is to first turn on the masked ocean or stream. Play the ocean or stream track until it is at a soft and calm level. Keeping the volume the same, switch to the ultrasonic. Basic rule is if it is irritating, turn it down. Being "tough" and sticking out the high pitch sounds doesn't make the subliminal any more effective. The whole point of a subliminal (ultrasonics are actually supraliminals:above hearing) is that you don't hear them. Even after calibrating I usually have to turn my volume down three notches as I have very sensitive hearing.

thanks, but what I have heard is that even if you have good equipment and you still can't hear the pitch that ultrasonic still can damage your ears... ?

If you can't hear it I'm afraid your hearings already been damaged by something else or you just weren't born with hearing that can pick it up. It's not the frequency that does the damage, that's impossible, it's the volume. Loud bass in cars can damage your hearing too yet you have kids with giant audio systems dooming down the road. Shooting guns without ear protection. All those are lower frequency than our ultrasonics. It is about volume/decibals. So the answer is no

lol yea my friend has some of those subs and that shit tickles

anyways though buddy this article in wikipedia is what kind of keeps me on the border of ultrasonics being harmful... Could you please scroll down on that page to safety which is a small ass part and explain it cause I think it proves your point but idk ... lol

Their recommendation on decibals of damaging hearing scares me. I think this link is a better reference: http://www.howstuffworks.com/question124.htm

The problem comes when people play them too loud since it's so high pitch it's hard to notice. As far as the guide on that link, I do not know if or how much the amount of dB's that cause hearing loss changes. My assumption is yes that less dB's would damage hearing at higher frequencies but I don't know for sure. Better to adjust on the safe side, I've been listening to ultrasonics for 5 years and can still hear them just as well as on day 1. I even had the volume louder than I shoulder have (but not too loud) for around half a year.
