To put it in computer terms... I have a dedicated high end octa-core processor upstairs, running ~16 consciously accessible background processes and at least one foreground processes at all times while I'm awake. When I am sleeping, 6-7 of those cores shut down and the remainder handle dreaming on 1-2 processes and important work on 1-2 processes.
I never stop thinking. Ever. Sometimes, this gets annoying. Like when I am in the middle of sex and suddenly I have to stop and take notes on an awesome idea that a background process finished processing on and presented to my conscious mind. (Pretty rare, but has happened.)
Most times, though, it's just random "Eureka!" moments that make people around me think I'm nuts.
