Cancer isn't really a common side-effect of anabolic steroids. As long as he's not taking growth hormones or growth factors like IGF-1 he shouldn't worry about it. More common is damage to organs like heart, liver (orals) or prostate. These are the things to worry about. But nevertheless, steroids aren't as bad as society and media say.
