Reading more of "Awaken the Giant Within" I'm about 125 pages into it.
Something Tony says is about "pain vs. pleasure" associations.
I know Shannon tried this for DMSI and it didn't seem to work. But from what I'm reading, it's simply the ASSOCIATION of pain or pleasure that motivates us, NOT actual pain or pleasure (which I think is what Shannon tried with the morphine drip). So maybe there's a chance to augment that.
Another thing: It never sat right with me how Shannon said he'd remove the pain aspect from the new program because I thought it might make us numb to pain and therefore feel like there are no negative consequences which would be VERY bad.
One of the reasons I was glad that Shannon was removing that aspect was because I personally can linger on painful emotions. But even then, it's still the "pain pleasure" response, in that it's LESS painful to sit with the pain than to do something about it.
We still need that pain if we're to outgrow bad behaviors.
Pain like shame for letting a friend down or being depressed because you don't contribute to society. Those are HEALTHY and should not be numbed imo.
Another thing Tony says is that you can have MORE positive than negative reasons to change or improve but STILL remain unchanged if the reason to not change is MORE EMOTIONALLY CHARGED.
So, for example:
Let's say you want to quit smoking.
Your Reasons For Quitting are:
You don't want to get lung cancer
You want to live long and healthy
You don't like the taste of cigarettes
You could definitely use the extra money you'd get from not buying all those packs of cigarettes
But the Reason you have for NOT Quitting is simply:
You'll lose your friends
IF That ONE belief for not quitting is more emotionally compelling than the others, you won't change.
You link MORE PAIN to quitting than you do to not quitting because for you, losing your friends is MORE PAINFUL than the reasons to quit smoking.
So perhaps something like that is going on with DMSI.
HOWEVER, it should be noted that simply having the right beliefs won't lead to success, one needs to know HOW and WHAT to do, but that's besides the point for this post.
