This is the drawback of using words to explain something - words are just signs to help point you toward a destination, but they aren't the destination itself. You just have to find what works for you through experiences and take on what other people say while remembering their meanings of certain words might be different to your own.
Like when you say "calm and content", your version of this is different from Shannon's, and that's why you aren't getting the same results as he does.
I totally agree with you, hence why I say "reality doesn't lie".
