The point of "Neutralize fear-mongering" would be to prevent unnecessary fear from making 2012 worse than it has to be. Waiting until it comes and goes would entirely miss the point. The problem is that fear-mongering seems to be a great way for the media to make money... more butts in seats = higher ratings = higher advertising rates. I'm pretty sure the religious community will be capitalizing on the fear-mongering too.
Based on what I know... 2012 is going to see a significant situation happen, and it will probably be some sort of "depression", but I don't think the fear-mongering is at all proportional to what's coming.
