If you have a speaker built in, and it's a stereo speaker, this can work, but without full stereo separation, it's not going to be quite as effective.
If it's a mono speaker, then you're losing some of the audio, since both channels are important.
If you're trying to listen to the sub through headphones or earbuds you're not actually wearing... Not much good.
I would go for speakers.
