I found meetup.com is great for finding groups and meet-ups for a whole range of interests. In fact I actually met one of my now best friends via one of the groups. It can seem daunting going to a meetup where you don't know anyone but everyone is in the same boat as you and are all there to meet like minded friendly people like yourself. They even have some gaming meetups and the like.
