People are different. For me the trickling stream is literally relaxing! So calm yet subtly guiding me to sleep
As for dB I don't know exactly but I set my volumes as loud as I can comfortably listen to and can hear the mumbling sound in the background.
This is quite interesting as when I use headphones I can't hear the mumbling sound unless I put set it into 70% at least. My headphone is high quality -Sennheiser HD 202 II and my speaker is normal quality Logitech Z120.

Just have the masked at a comfortable volume then try ultrasonic at that same volume.

Some speakers even though mention to produce 20 KHz sound is absolute crap. I am not convinced on doing Ultrasonic with speaker maximize with only 20 KHz. Anybody knows which speaker can produce more than 21 KHz frequency please tell me.
