I understand your reasoning, but from a customer perspective, it's not working. Definitely not. Yeah, maybe there will be some users who will agree with that one, but in the real market, it's not working.
In the end, it depends where Shannon wants to position himself and his work. If he perceives his subs as superior in terms of quality to the competitors', this payment scheme is not an option.
It's all about commitment. If one wants badly enough to evolve, she/he will find the monetary means.
