Carl Jung believed that any and all characters in your dreams who you can see the faces of represent aspects of your own psyche. Furthermore, if the character is the opposite gender of you in waking life (born gender, not "sexual identity" gender) then they represent the part of your psyche that is the opposite sex.
For males, this is called their "Anima", and for females this is called their "Animus".
He also believed that fear or [sometimes] fighting represented an aspect of one's repressed nature known as "The Shadow".
I believe his theories were correct, so that's my input.
