I create my subliminals in such a way that whenever you have stereo separation of channels, they work better; and, the more perfect the stereo separation is, the better they work. The best you can get is 100% of the left channel in one ear, and 100% of the right channel in the other ear. So headphones and earbuds are going to work somewhat better than speakers in that regard, and noticeably better than mono in most cases.
But headphones aren't necessary if they are not a feasible option.
