The effects are different for everyone. And generally the longer you meditate the more emotionally stable and happier you become.
For mysef ive noticed:
- increased pain tolerance, mental and physical
- decrease in anxiety/depression
- help me stay grounded in the moment as i go about my day
- overcoming various addictions
- generaly calmer, non-agressive and less reactive
- improved sleep
- generally happier and more satisfied with life
- less attachment to material posessions.
