I'm not sure about gain or equalizer. Safer to have them off.
As for volume, it's simple to set. If you're using ultrasonic then set the volume with a masked version first, have it at a comfortable volume from where you're listening, then you can play ultrasonic at that volume. Doesn't have to be anything fancy.
