Yeah, acting like a psycho works wonders. You can even pretend to be criminally insane. You do that well enough, you won't even have to beat anyone up to make "tough guys" stay away from you.
F. in., a friend of mine managed to avoid a serious beating by threatening the guys who were attacking him that he will vomit on them. He put his finger down his throat to induce vomiting and all. They ran away instantly.
What I like to do, personally, when in a tight spot, is a mixture of these two types of behavior:

For actual scuffles, knives are extremely dangerous. I'd recommend pepper spray, actually, if you're unwilling to risk a knife-fight (though it might be my culture speaking - you use a knife where I'm from, even in self defense, yo ass goin' to prison most probably. We've got retarded self-defense laws).
