Need advice to buy better speakers - fab10 - 08-12-2020

Hi
I listen plugging my iPhone into computer speakers. I just found out that the speakers I have used for most of my ultrasonic listening so far have an upper frequency response of 18KHz. That really upsets me because it probably limited the effectiveness of most of my past listening.

I urgently need better speakers.

I am looking at (price low to high)

Logitech Z150
Edifier R12U (my favorite but it’s USB powered, would that be a problem or can I plug it into a phone charger?)
Creative inspire T12 2.0
Bose Companion 2 Series III (too expensive really but if that’s what it takes...)

With which of the above can I be absolutely sure I get maximum results from ultrasonic?
Any other under $100 U.S. dollars you can recommend?

Thank you very much for your advice.

I can't really recommend any specific ones, mine are a few years old, but are logitech and have been fine.

http://www.subliminal-shop.com/faqs/list-recommended-speakers-headphones/

First you want to look at the specifications.
Quote:The speakers must have an upper frequency response of atleast 20khz and be stereo. Good quality speakers are also going to be best, really cheap speakers such as laptop inbuilt speakers are of low quality and may affect the results.

And you can also use our speaker test http://www.subliminal-shop.com/product/speaker-test/

Thanks Ben, my current speakers are decent quality and passed the speaker test but it wasn’t until last night that I found out that the upper frequency response is only 18Khz. I am very disappointed because I am sure it affected my past listening significantly.

Anyway, I just purchased the Edifier speakers, I understand it’s a good brand and it guarantees 20Khz upper frequency response. I’ll run the speaker test when they arrive tomorrow.

Hey guys how important is the lower end of the frequency response range??
- I'm looking at so many different speaker options in Melbourne but I literally can't seem to find a single speaker that has a lower frequency response range of 20hz, they all start around 60-80hz and the range is usually to 25-40Khz (which is obviously great at the top end of the range).

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers,

Ali

I don’t think it matters because you would be listening to ultrasonic, i.e. the upper range. All starting at 60-80 Hz seems weird though, may I ask what brand you’re looking at?

Thanks mate.
I have just been searching 'speakers melbourne' into google and searching through the Audio stores. Some of the brands I have been looking at are Marshall, Audioengine, KEF, and Cambridge Audio. They aren't cheap but they all seem to be fairly good quality speakers.

@Shannon are you able to confirm that the lower end of the frequency response is not so crucial? i.e if the speaker frequency response range starts at say 60Hz - 28Khz. I don't want to end up investing in a speaker that isn't perfect to play Subs with. Thank you Smile)

RE: Need advice to buy better speakers - Ali - 08-14-2020

Hey mate I've actually gone and purchased a setup from an audio specialist. They gave me some pretty good advice. Essentially they advised that it is extremely unlikely that a single speaker on its own / desktop speakers  (unless you are spending several thousands) will be able to play anything down in the in low frequency range of 20-40 hz, and if it states that it can then its almost a marketing ploy and a lie.

But I remembered that Ultrasonic predominately plays at 17Khz (when I used freqensee) and so I think I've been over analysing and worrying about the lower end range for no reason hahahahah. Oooooops! All a learning experience!

I've purchased a set-up of a digital to analogue converter (by Cambridge Audio) and a set of AudioEngine A5+ desktop speakers. The advice I got was that the converter would ensure that all the 'digital' data from my MacBook Pro would be converted perfectly to 'analogue' without any data loss (so you maintain perfect depth and clarity of sound) to the speakers. The speakers have a frequency response range of 50hz - 22Khz +/- 1.5Db.

Total cost was $900 AUD. Not cheap but overall good value considering the quality, and ultimately I'm confident it will play all 3 versions of the Subs well. I was also thinking that I will be planning on investing at least that much money if not alot more over the future in Subs from IML, so I should make sure I've got a setup that plays the subs as best as possible also.

Hope this information helps you or anyone else looking at purchasing a setup!

Cheers,
Ali

Yay. Good on ya mate! Besides subs, you now have a great sound system for everything else if you want to.

I was thinking the same- I spent the equivalent of over $800 U.S. dollars on subs and I was often playing them with ten dollar speakers. I am sure I lost at least half of the effectivity for that, over 3 months, that was incredibly stupid. I was also ready to buy really good speakers now but reality caught up with me and I could not afford it, so I had to compromise. I am still using cheap speakers but better ones and guaranteed to reach 20Khz. They will probably become my computer speakers when I buy good ones down the line.

Now the problem is the player- VLC for iOS, which I used to highly recommend to everyone, including you if I recall correctly, started acting up. I am testing Vox right now, looks good once you weed through all the needless options, I will let you know. What player are you using? You are using a Mac however, different story.

Thanks mate! I spent 4 hours yesterday listening to music non-stop!! I'm not sure if it is a result of my first cycle of UMS or simply because the music sounds so incredible lol but whatever it is it is raising my vibration to another level! We are in full lockdown here in Melbourne so I'm spending my time training and now I'm going to listen to music 24/7!!

I think if you are using speakers that are def reaching 20khz then you are sweet. I tried searching the web for hours to figure out if my MacBook Pro internal speakers were 20khz but Apple just don't give that information to anyone! I find that a little ridiculous tbh but I suppose laptops aren't designed to be sound systems hahaha. I just didn't want to risk playing months of Subs and potentially not receiving the full benefit hence the investment in these speakers.

Tomorrow is the day that I will start my second cycle of UMS and I'll be using the new speaker set up. I'll have to play around with the volume because you can go next level high with these speakers. I can tolerate more volume during the day because I can potently hear the 'ringing' from the Ultrasonic. If I'm going to do my cycle at night whilst sleeping then I will probably have to lower the volume somewhat to reduce the 'ringing' to what's comfortable. I've done some tests using the Masked sub and all the volume ranges i've tested are audible with the Masked Sub which means that I should be able to play Ultrasonic at any volume that is comfortable.

What kind of problem are you having with VLC mate? I'm assuming you are using your iPhone?? If so what model of iPhone? Did you know that you can play the .Flac Subs using the 'Files' app on the iPhone. It plays them perfectly. The only issue using 'Files' app is that you can't create a playlist so you'll need manually play the Sub again once it finishes the first loop. Hopefully Vox works well for you.
I'm using VLC but on my MacBook Pro and it works pretty well playing all files.

I'll keep you posted on how I'm feeling next week after second cycle of UMS. At the moment I feel amazing!! Thankyou universe! Thankyou IML! I'm not sure exactly what to attribute it all too - I believe its a combination of many things I've been doing the last 2 months. I'm grateful for it all!

Cheers,

Ali

RE: Need advice to buy better speakers - tolgaocal80 - 08-15-2020

I don't think speaker quality is a really important thing, if you is using masked it is alright to use any kind of speakers including laptop speakers as long as the sound doesn't sizzle, Shannon said this sometimes. And if it is ultrasonic it should be reach 20Khz or better frequency. I use cheap Creative Sbs A120 speakers. it is a good sound system and produces 40hz-20khz frequency they are right to my head when I sleep.
But of course when it is comes down to music, your system should be amazing I love high quality sound materials  Thumbsup

I think the main thing to consider is what your objectives are. If you are planning on using the Ultrasonic format then speaker quality is important. That doesn't mean expensive, but it does mean a speaker that has the frequency response range of at least up to 20Khz as Shannon advises. This doesn't mean you need to break the bank though as there are plenty of speakers that can achieve this. For me I didn't have any speakers at all apart from one bluetooth speaker (which I know would have not been good) and I also wanted to get a good reasonable set that would play music well too hence I bought some that were more expensive so I could achieve both objectives :Smile Win Win haha.

Hope your journey is going well tolgacal80  Smile good to hear from you

My problem is exactly playing more loops. LTU6 is 7 loops of over one hour each, playing manually is impossible. Most players do not allow playlists where the same track is repeated more than once. The latest VLC for iOS does but sometimes stops after the first loop, and sometimes it does not, I have not figured out what the pattern is. Another problem is that since all the tracks have the same name and there is no “queue” view, you cannot see how far into the playlist you are.
A workaround for both problems is to duplicate the file 7 times and rename them, 2 to 4GB of disk space down the drain, not the end of the world but it just seems stupid that there is no other way.

I’ll report how Vox works out.
