It is stereo just comes from the same speaker if that makes sense probably not as powerful than if you used seperate speakers that have some distance between them but it definitely is stereo I played hypnosis tracks through the built in speaker which has dual induction so two voices are playing at the same time from different speakers/earphones and you can hear it clearly. It's stereo speakers just built into one space with small gap between them.
Well, I don't want to argue with you endless, but if you will do some research you will find out that even the iPhone 6 is mono. So far.

Since my cd player died a while ago i've been using external pc speakers I brought plugged into my ipod at night and it's worked well. I'm sure you could do the same with your iphone, though my phone is from the stoneage so I don't know.
