While I'm sleeping I just listen to the Ultrasonic track on my iPod without the earphones in I just set the iPod beside my pillow, will this work okay or do I need to listen from better speakers?

If you have a speaker built in, and it's a stereo speaker, this can work, but without full stereo separation, it's not going to be quite as effective.
If it's a mono speaker, then you're losing some of the audio, since both channels are important.
If you're trying to listen to the sub through headphones or earbuds you're not actually wearing... Not much good.
I would go for speakers.

The speakers I plug into my ipod are pc speakers and only cost me like $130 as that was all the money I had at the time when my cd player died. They work fine for me.
