Compressing the Subs

I read somewhere that burning the subs directly on a cd won't work,so u have to convert it wav. I want to ask what if we compress the sub into rar/zip, will it spoil the sub or is it ok to burn a sub to a cd that way(for storage purposes).

Rar/Zip are lossless compression formats, so no problem there.
