True. That is an influence strategy. Make them think that the decision come from them.
I must have done that unconsciously few times. A sign that the breakup process is on is when the girl starts to place you in her history and says stuff like:
You are the first guy that did XYZ for me
or
You are one of the few guys that made such a difference in my life.
When she starts using that type of language, even if the breakup isn't official yet, she is turning the page right under your eyes...
