The way I've been able to get around the wire issue is to have a 5-6ft extension cable that plugs directly into my phone which sits on the night stand next to my bed. I Then plug my earbuds into that extension cable.
Once it's all hooked up, I leave plenty of slack at my phone to prevent me from jerking the cable loose or pulling my phone off the stand. At the other end, I place part of the cable under my pillow to prevent me from getting tangled up in it then pull enough slack out from under my pillow (~ 12in) and leave it right where the pillow meets the bed to prevent me from yanking the earbuds out of my ear. I also use the sport-type wrap around earbuds to help keep them in place.
i don't keep my earbuds seated in my ear canals. They tend to become dislodged while sleeping anyway, so I let them rest outside the canals and calibrate my volume based what's comfortable in that position. I've also trained myself to cup my ear if I roll on my side. That helps me avoid mashing my ear/earbud into an odd position that closes off the sound completely.
This has worked well for me if you decide to continue with earbuds.
