My interpretation would be that the gang and it's leader is DMSI, and the "crimes" is what DMSI is trying to accomplish. The gun is something that DMSI gave you to execute the script and achieve the goals, which you turned on DMSI in an effort to resist. The "police" would be the parts of you that are enforcing the status quo/ "the law" which you fear to go against. The gang leader is likely symbolizing that part of you that was most strongly executing, and the "killing it" likely means you have successfully repressed it for the time being.

The killing of it getting you arrested would then also mean that you know that what you are doing (resisting, attempting to "kill it") is wrong.

Getting arrested literally means "to be stopped", and this part of you symbolized by the police likely represents the parts of you resisting. Overall, you fear to go against the status quo and were willing to commit a bigger "crime" to prevent a smaller one, meaning you are willing to do almost anything to avoid execution and going against the status quo.

I don't think that your resistance would have been weakened at all in this scenario. It would have, with your help, symbolically won that round.

If I didn't think you'd be able to overcome your resistance, would I have spent all this time and effort building all these versions of DMSI?

If we consider that most of the people who have run DMSI have resisted, and that is what has forced me to keep working on this for so long, then we can presume that the majority of a bell curve would represent people who attempt to resist DMSI, and that would make that reaction "normal".

I did forget to interpret the police firing 8 times and having the gun jam each time. I interpret that as being the part of you trying to maintain the status quo trying to kill you, but being prevented - possibly by DMSI, possibly because the transformation that such a symbolic death would bring is not yet happening enough, and possibly because it was trying to scare you but not harm you.
