I don't think joy and happiness is necessary for SM, but certainly a good stable mood, a joy de vivre, a contentment and a sense of inexorably having already 'made it' are all irresistible qualities.
In my experience from college frat parties to NYC night life-the guy who is having the most shameless fun, and seems dominant but still extremely happy/content ends up with the most attractive woman.
And likewise during times I have felt inexplicable happy I do my best with woman as well.
