I've seen people with zero or very little confidence do courageous things. The fight-or-flight response (also called the fight, flight, freeze, or fawn response [in PTSD], hyperarousal, or the acute stress response) is a physiological reaction that occurs in response to a perceived harmful event, attack, or threat to survival.
Either they got angry or decided what was happening was wrong and they decided to do something to make it right. Then when it was over they were physically shaken in disbelief that they actually acted with courage. Something in their mind snapped.
