It appears to be the case that negation and reversal are two different classes of understanding for the subconscious mind. "Un", "dis" and "de" work, and it appears that "non" works, too (as in non-smoker), but no, not, and the various contraction forms do not.
I don't claim to know why... I just work with what works. I'll be retesting the negation words in another year or so.
