Some, not much, consulted with my crazy mum, who - despite being crazy - is a very good MD. IIRC, she said there are people for whom high-dosage supplementation of vit D could be poisonous in the end (this might depend on, like you've mentioned, diet and other things, f. in. endocrine system health and liver health), but in general that people should really, really be taking much more of it. 2,000 IUs/day is the "play it safe" dosage that won't hurt nobody. Same with vit C. We actually have a gene that's capable of metabolizing your own vit C, it's just inactive for some reason, haha. With vit C there's very little in the way of side-effects if you overdose, you'll most probably just pee it out.
Around here (where healthcare is state-funded and "free" for most cases, which has quite a bit of pros as well as a lot of cons, f. in. red tape) as far as I can tell the MDs' opinions on vit D supplementation are divided, and dependent on their own experiences with it (f. in. if a doctor had to treat someone who overdosed on the thing, they'll be all like "aaah, no, DON'T") as well as what literature they used and/or whether they've been keeping up with the newest studies (technically, they're required to do so, but you know, people are people
).
Personally, I believe that the American healthcare system is an abomination that's designed as a money-making scheme. It's what you get when you pretend you have a "free market", lol.
One one hand, were my mum an MD with her specializations in the US, we'd have been mutli-millionaires by now. On the other hand, she got into the biz to, you know, *treat* people.
