When I face resistance, the way I deal with it is to try to understand it, what part(s) of me are giving it, and why. Sometimes, before bed, I will ask that part of myself to share with my conscious awareness why it is resisting by giving me a dream in which I have it explained, and then cause my conscious to remember the dream. This, at least once, has led to some very deep and surprising revelations as to why my subconscious was resisting.
Once I understand why there is resistance, I try to communicate to that part of me that the resistance is unnecessary, that we have this, that the conscious part of me is more experienced and knows how to handle this safely, etc. Sometimes this works, and sometimes it does not. Sometimes, the resisting part is too primal, too instinctual to comprehend logic.
Sometimes I power through. Sometimes I give myself time to feel and process the fear, and gradually move towards facing it anyway until I have overcome it. It depends on what program I am using at the time, also. But drugs and such are just escape mechanisms. Running away doesn't solve the issue.
