I would say that 2-3 days without sleep can put you out of commission, and 4-6 can potentially put you in the mental hospital. 7+ can potentially kill you, although I have heard of torture victims being kept awake for weeks on end as a form of "interrogation". I would not want to find out what that does to the mind and body.
If you really went that long without sleep, you were recharging your brain in some other way for sure, but you can't just decide to stay awake and drink lots of caffeine and do it, that's for sure.
