What is the difference between a distraction and being productive? - Subeternal - 05-14-2013

I was reading I think one of Benjamin's posts about trying to stop playing pc games altogether in order to get more done. Its a vague question I suppose but how do you know when the things your doing are productive in terms of getting closer to a goal or maintaining yourself overall.

I ask this because many will go with the "Everything in moderation" thing and others will say that doing certain things like movie watching, porn, leisure reading, playing a game are things that "detract" from a person.

What I'm asking is if you have to go to the extreme and stop doing things that have no interpersonal or success value in order to "perfect" yourself. In comparison to games I find sports are good for fostering bonds and relationships and keeping your mind/body active. Video games in my perception give an illusion of that.

I guess doing some of those stuff like playing comp games(once in a while) could be beneficial for you in order for you to reach your goal. It prevents you from having burnouts. Think of them as temporary "essential" pauses. But always remember not to get well engrossed to such activities or it'll be a problem you would call "distraction". Sports and outdoor stuff are also better examples of such temporary pauses compared to playing video games. But if you prefer playing video games then I suggest you play it for the minimum amount of time that it can be played after which you could go back to what you were doing previously. just my two cents Smile

Sexy hit it on the spot.

For me, I no longer can play video games for more than 1 hour a week. I barely do that now. And just so not to burn out I'll take a nap... or go out and socialize. Something that allows me to get a real connection. Or I'll just take a drive somewhere and walk around outside for that real connection.

Since I'm going to die I don't like the idea of wasting time. My idea of wasting time is different from other people's ideas of wasting time, but usually someone knows when they are not being productive deep down in their heart. It's their choice on whether or not they want to let it remain a distraction.

In nature, all things seek equilibrium and balance if left to their own devices. The only creature that does not is the human...

Going to any extreme will eventually require balancing. It's an inevitable truth bout the reality in which we live. Seeking balance, being alright with it, and being at peace is the way that I find works for me.

Perfection is a goal, not a destination. At least, not while you exist as part of the physical world.
