It creates an aura of sexiness based on energy signatures that trigger that perception from others of the gender you desire. Generally, I find that whenever I make myself more sexy, it is taken and married women who come out of the woodwork, and the others consider me from afar most of the time unless I actively hunt them down and conquer them.
I believe this has to do with a fundamental change in the thinking of women of these two camps. Those who are single, usually are so (if they are attractive) because they don't want a relationship. They want to play, and they expect you to hunt them, and they want to keep their options open.
Another factor in play is that taken women sometimes are taken because they don't feel comfortable being single. These women frequently tend to have a pattern of "trading up". If they're not with anyone, they take the first they can get, and then they swing from one man to the next hoping to trade up each time. But in the mean time, they don't end one relationship before starting the next. They're too insecure to be single, so they just try to find someone who interests them while they're involved.
Sometimes, you'll get this from married women who are bored, or are wanting to use you to add spice to their marriage.
I have this response all the time when I go out. Taken/married women are on me like white on rice, even in front of BF/hubby (who sometimes does surprising things at his wife's suggestion, like putting her number in my phone while she tries to give me a more obvious display of cleavage). Single women, meh, they're usually looking for the man who will come approach them, and do all the work, so unless I go hunt them, they'll usually only give me eyes or a smile at most.
