If you took the music away from a masked sub, would it work the same as an ultrasonic sub, being as it would be barely audible? I was just wondering. It just seems like a masked sub without the masking, but could still be played on crappy speakers would be a good way of doing subs.

Masked subs are audible without the masking. That's why they need a mask. Otherwise, they would be "liminal" - not sub-liminal.
