If using a stereo hi fi system with detached speakers, do the speakers have to be set wide apart and do you have to be in the centre or can you just play it like listening to radio with hi fi in corner of living room and you moving around
The better the stereophonic channel separation on the incoming audio, the better the impact will be. So having them playing directly into only one ear each is ideal - this headphones. But on speakers, having them be opposite the head with ears facing them is idea. That does not allow for very realistic usage conditions, and fortunately, it is not required for success. Any stereo audio source will do, even if you move about the room. It just works best on perfect stereophonic separation, which you will only get from headphones, but headphones will probably not be ideal for using during some activities, and are not recommended for ultrasonic usage.
Ok i tested the sound test file. It goes silent at 17 seconds on my hi fi system. Is that OK?
Does the speaker test go from audible to silent instantly, which would be an issue with your speakers or player failing to reproduce high pitches, or does it fade from high pitch to ultrasonic, which would be normal? Most people can hear it fade gradually to ultrasonic around 22 seconds or so.

high pitch and goes silent gradually and fades at around 17 seconds
If it gradually fades, you're losing the ability to hear it because the pitch goes too high. If it goes from audible to silent suddenly, or goes from audible to static, you have a system that cannot play ultrasonics.
