As far as I know all iPhones that have been released up to 6S only have mono speakers, which means if you're playing ultrasonics from your iPhone speakers you're not getting the full effect.
I believe all iPad speakers have stereo, so you should be safe.
Make sure to check the device specifications page for your device on Apple.com to make sure that they
1. play in stereo and
2. have frequency response between 20hz-20khz.
Edit: also make sure that the headphone jack on whatever device you're using is functioning properly. I realized that on my iPhone the headphone jack on the device itself had become loose, which was messing up the quality of my subliminal. When I switched to using another MP3 player I heard a higher quality sound and felt quite differently than I did with the iPhone.
