I would say it comes down to vibe. I've noticed a significant decrease in my online "successes" ever since I wrote a very stupid profile (can't delete the text, can only change it, but I got much better responses when there was no text lol).
At the same time, experience is key. Start with the smallest step, and move to the next sticking point.
