Don't use the Ultrasonics with your headphones as it could be damaging to your ears and you won't even know you are losing your hearing until after a few days. You should use speakers for the Ultrasonics.
The masked version should be listened to with your headphones as it is more effective that way.
I personally went for the headphones for the masked version but then I switched to ultrasonics instead after getting a proper music theater system.
Make sure you use the masked version first to calibrate the volume of the ultrasonics as it says so in the directions given on the website.
According to Andrew on the website even after calibration of the Ultrasonic according to the masked version, you may have to turn down the volume a few notches while listening to Ultrasonics as it may be too loud for your ears if you are younger and have sensitive hearing as is the case for me.
Try out different volumes for yourself over a course of week which is what I did and got my perfect volume in which I know I am getting the full effect of the subs as I can feel the Ultrasonics in my ears.
Hope that helped and solved your issue.
Happy listening!
